Those are great points i and 1. While it's hard to defend Philip as a sane actor, he has been in many ways rational. Crazy as it seems, the guy's put himself in a relatively good position to advance after going all aggro-Coach in the first episode.

It's funny that it was in a movie that nobody remembers from the ass-end of his acting career, and would basically be a song that time forgot were it not for a remix from a remade Frank Sinatra movie. Now it seems like one of the more important tunes from his catalog.
