I saw this after reading it listed in an AVC Inventory. Got it off Netflix and loved it. I picked up the DVD for $5 on sale at the Virgin Megastore. I thought the noir/high school overlay worked really well, and that the humor in the film kept it light enough to avoid the gimmick stifling the characters. I

Well, Terry1, that settles it. Anytime I can sate my bloodlust without guilt, I'm there!

The first movies was internally consistent; when they added sequels, it got messy. After much pondering, I gave up trying to reconcile the temporal in the Terminator movies and just try to enjoy T1 and T2 (but not T3) as good sci-fi action flicks.

Lemur, you're right on that the issue comes up a lot more wrt public schools. I'm a pretty serious separation advocate, and I still have no problem with public schools using religious texts as assigned reading in the proper context. I do wish they would use other texts in addition to the Bible; you don't hear very

@ Elusive RD: I've never been convinced that Tom Hanks is a good actor. I've certainly enjoyed him in some roles, but I've never thought of him as a truly gifted actor. And, as you point out, sometimes he's just bad.

Yeah, I saw the trailer before Star Trek the other day and was totally psyched about it. This review is a bit of a damper. Still going to see it, but it sounds as though my expectations, in terms of both what it is and its quality, need some revision.

Agree, SOH, on the first four albums. I even think To Venus and Back has some moments, and the live disc 2 is worth the purchase price.

I saw her in Baltimore way, way back (in 1996), and thought she was great live. I'd be glad to see her again, especially if this album is better than what she's been doing recently.

I also read parts of the Bible in my (private) high school humanities class. Concur that there's nothing wrong with reading it as part of the major Western literary tradition and a knowledge of it definitely helps with later reading.

@ Dr. Strangelovecraft: Aren't there other (and preferable) options for viewing fit young ladies wearing (or not) skimpy clothes? For example, you obviously have internet access. Also, nice application of math to drinking.

ET, I think you're referring to "Digital Fortress", but I can't be bothered to look it up to confirm.

Audrey Tatou was also good in Dirty Pretty Things.

Yeah, I also don't watch American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.

@ Some registered guy: Nice Simpsons reference. It just never gets old when Sideshow Bob steps on those rakes.

If you do it that way, Hip Hopster, does it kill your hangover instead of your buzz? 'Cause I could definitely get behind that.

Sarah Palin book
I can't wait for the how-to chapter on aerial wolf gunning.

Check out Michael Palin's Himalaya. It's taken from his journal of trekking through the Himalaya through Pakistan, India, Nepal, and others, down to Bhutan and Bangladesh. Good text and wonderful pictures.

Akira Kurosawa
I think the first Kurosawa film I saw was Ran, and I just couldn't figure out what all the hype was about. It was busy and overwrought and there was so much yelling. I saw Rashoman and thought it better, but still didn't get it.

I put all the NGE discs on my Netflix queue. I have disc 3 at home right now and I'm just sort of stalled out on it. It hasn't grabbed me. I find the plotting and characterization mediocre at best, trite at worst, and I don't think the art is anything special. I'm on the verge of giving up. Is it worth

I hadn't heard Jolene in many years, but I remember my parents playing it back when it was practically a new release. My parents have some questionable taste in music, but they got it right with that song (and album).
