Most CGI fractals are extremely cheap. You just set up an algorithm and leave the computer to render it. Much cheaper than hiring actual artists.

Unlike a lot of Star Wars stories, it will (I imagine) be fairly unpredictable who will live and who will die. It's not like the endings of the earlier films were particularly surprising. Will the giant evil space thing be destroyed just in time? Yes, of course it will.

Which is a reasonable attitude to take. Jackson wasn't faithful to the material in lots of other ways (Bombadil, etc.) So, even assuming Tolkien said at some point, "all the hobbits and elves and wizards and non-evil humans and dwarves were definitely caucasian," that doesn't mean we can't have a more inclusive cast…
