I think it's because they think they're being great Starfleet officers. If you have a captain then by space, you do exactly what that captain says! This is what Starfleet is all about! RED SQUAD!

I like that Valiant is a bunch of people we didn't know (as I geeked out upthread.)
He hasn't been field promoted to Captain though. Any officer in command of a ship, regardless of rank, is addressed as 'Captain' (IIRC there's even a scene on DS9 where Nog learns this fact.)
Odd thing to think since Red Squad were introduced in a season four two-parter.
558 and Paper Moon aren't proper two parters, but the rest are.
'Peacetime' I think undersells Decker's position, since he went full-Ahab facing an existential threat that could have possibly eaten up every planet in the Federation.
Valiant is an episode I loved on pure cool factor. It's a NEW SHIP and a NEW CREW. You have any idea how much I geeked out about stuff like that?
Well you absolutely should watch it. I'm not sure if I would suggest starting with the series pilot (as it's actually a very good pilot) or showing you, say, "Duet" or something, but it's one of the best sci-fi series ever made and is worthy of a second look that does not involve one of the worst episodes of the…
I know. I'm just saying. Ah, the Foreign Film ghetto, where every nation must select their very own Highlander.
But West Africans were still Africans. We are not saying all Africans were enslaved or that people from right across the continent of Africa were enslaved.
Good question! I don't know offhand, but I do know that once an animated film - Waltz With Bashir - was nominated in this category.
…I didn't even stop to think. Wow, that was unbelievably callous of me.
Yeah but… does it really have a bigger twitter impact than, say, Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead? If so I am surprised.
Not only was Wadjda not nominated for Best Foreign Film, Wadjda was not on the shortlist.
The Missing Picture got nominated! The Missing Picture got nominated!
It's weird, I've seen so many great documentaries from 2013 and yet Act of Killing is the only one to get a Documentary nom.
Redford's lack of a nomination is unbelievable. All Is Lost may not be an amazing film, but it's anchored so totally by Redford the nomination feels almost obligatory.
A Hijacking is the better version of Captain Phillips and it got nominated for jack.
Still, shame - if unsurprising - that A Hijacking got nowhere with any nominations, but then it wasn't even Denmark's pick for Best Foreign Film.
Or Helen Mirren!
