I think the "thing … with the heart-shaped tip" in the Pocahontas box is supposed to be an arrow - it's upside-down, and the "heart" is its fletching.

Agreed.  I went with a friend who hated the movie, and now I sing "Slow Boat to China" when I want to annoy him.  But Phoenix's acting in that scene - the astounding transformations in his face - is something to behold.

I prefer the first movie, too… I think the tonal inconsistency works to its benefit.  Gremlins 2 is Looney Tunes and a ton of fun, but the uncomfortable mix of tones in Gremlins is sui generis.  There's nothing else quite like it.
