Some pro/con here: I think of all the directors of his generation, Spielberg seems to have the most intuitive sense of pure, conventional cinema.  His senses are uncanny - it's like his sense of film grammar has never been hampered either by amateurism or by overthinking things.  As a craftsman, he's one of the best

Certainly up there, but Errol Morris exists.

It's a little cheesy, but I think it's better than the "Have I been a good man?" moment at the end of Saving Private Ryan.

Agreed.  They're almost always great, but very little of their work hits the total devastation of Marge Gunderson's disillusionment.  Her speech to Grismrud at the end is heartbreaking.

Likewise, although I was less sure about All About My Mother.  Then Talk to Her blew me away.

Correct.

Correct.

Seconded.  Without doubt my favorite (pseudo?)documentary, and easily in my top 5 of all films, ever.

The original is a frequently great comedy attached to a frequently awful melodrama. I won't pretend that I don't know half the one-liners by heart.

I prefer the show when it's at its cartooniest.  No surprise that my favorite episode last season (by a country mile) was "Leap Day".
