I like John Hawkes a lot, and he looks just fine in The Sessions, but Joaquin Pheonix is just plain tremendous in The Master.  I was never a fan of his (his nomination for Gladiator is still the stuff of punchlines… "It vexes me!"), but I've rarely seen a performance that deeply internalized, and that well-controlled…
