I think you could get away with it, provided no one turns you in.  I have a friend who played a song like this on a university radio station, and she did get an angry phone call from a Russian-speaking parent who was driving with her child when the song came on.  Otherwise that was it.

Not really, although its treatment of racial harmony, and the use of a white actor to portray a Chinese man, both may seem a bit more patronizing now.  But the subject matter? It's anti-racism and pro-interracial romance, which is waaaaay ahead of its time, considering how long mainstream cinema would have to wait for

Huge news in Russia.  The prosecuting attorney has so far compared it to 9/11 (not a joke) and the apocalypse (also not a joke).  Since all the major media outlets are owned by the states, they're having a field day deflecting to this, instead of the anti-Putin protests.

Major distinction: both Birth of a Nation and Triumph of the Will contain the offensive content within the films themselves. That's why no one blasts e.g. Broken Blossoms or Intolerance as "made by the guy who also sympathized with the Klan", but saves their vitriol for the actual content of Birth.

If there is any conceivable way you can see Andrei Rublev in a theatre instead of a television screen, do it.  The whole movie is amazing, but the last ten minutes will blow you away.

Personally I agree, but Mulholland Drive has become something of a consensus pick in critical circles for one of the two or three best films of the last decade.  So it's not really a surprise to see it there.

I dunno… I think Inglorious Basterds has more severe flaws than some of his other works, but I'd love to see Jackie Brown or (hope of hopes!) Kill Bill v. 1 at the top.  Still, only time will tell.

True, but I think he'll eventually do well for the same reason that Truffaut and Godard do well: film critics who make films for other film critics.

@avclub-46936add066bd6422b3ac74a0ccb7174:disqus : maybe perfect as far as a narrative puzzle-box goes ('tho I disagree with that, too), but… And I say this as someone who thinks it's a sight better than Nolan's recent films, it's far from a perfect film, and in its editing, compositions, dialogue, and acting comes

@avclub-d89b833158f0d9a73fd33bb243fe5786:disqus : Of all the 'classic' films in the canon, there's not a single one that confuses me more than Gone with the Wind.  I get the sweeping compositions and the earworm-y score, but it's a bland, interminable melodrama where I wish all the characters would shut the hell up
