Absolutely, great recommendation.  Chytilová's Daisies is one of the most enjoyably bonkers films ever made, and Forman's Czech films are superior to his English-language films.

Because it's perfect.

TIFF, whose polling was a bit more international, picked the very worthy Syndromes and a Century.

I'll be honest and say that North by Northwest left me cold, but I've only seen it once and I'm willing to give it another chance.  My top Hitch films would include Vertigo, Notorious, and The 39 Steps (which I felt was doing the same shtick as NXNW, but much better)

Tropical Malady's my pick for best film of the last decade, so I'm right there with you.

Any particular reason why you switch from transliteration to translation halfway through?  Just curious why Bauer gets the Russian treatment, but Vertov's film isn't properly Chelovek s kinoapparatom.

That's what converted me to Vertigo.  I mean, it's a damned good movie in any format, but seeing it in a dark theatre… nightmares.  The crazy carousel shot near the end is about as intense as it gets, when you're sucked into the full theatre experience.

Yeah, I figure I wasn't in the right mood when I saw it, or maybe it's just not for me.  But I feel the same way when I see how off-putting some of my own favorite movies can be to people who aren't in the mood for them (Tropical Malady!) so I try to be patient, give it another chance every now and then, and at least

If I were an S&S voter my own list would be a bit more.. erm, modern? (I'd still find room for Vertov, though.)  But I think Tobias is right about why the consolidated list ends up the way it does, and since every one of those movies is an expression of pure joy (well, maybe not 2001 per se), I have no problem with

I'm glad to see all the love for Man with a Movie Camera.  I've been teaching it for years, and students are always surprised when I tell them I'm queuing up a silent, black&white film to see something so vibrant, energetic, tongue-in-cheek, and just plain crazy.  There's nothing quite like that last 2-minute rush of
