We really disagree about the hallmarks of a decent story. If under-thinking is required, then I don't think it's a good story. This guy is supposed to be a charismatic plotting genius and the plotting needs to be consistent with that.

It was much more likely the arc of the convenant.  Marcellus Wallace's soul fits into a standard case that can be carried by one person. Also, losing it again would suggest an indifference on Mr. Wallace's part that greatly reduces his souls perceived value. Also, he lived on the west coast.
