Gilmore Girls was a particularly egregious example of this trope. Lorelai and Rory would order a huge meal at Luke's, then one or both of them would leave without eating more than one bite of it - if that. And yet they somehow had a reputation for being big eaters.
Um, Frasier was anything but quiet. He was a quintessential extrovert - he liked being around people, loved to talk endlessly, and adored being the centre of attention. Those are all pretty useful qualities for a talk-show host.
The Targaryens take it to insane lengths. If you look up a Targaryen family tree, almost everyone has a name that begins with Ae- (Aerys, Aegon), Dae- (Daenerys, Daemon) or Rhae- (Rhaegar, Rhaella), and there are dozens of Aegons and Daeneryses. Very realistic, no doubt, but it makes the backstory ridiculously…
Secretly boning each other is not the same as being publicly infatuated with each other.
Even worse is when people take the time and effort to cook something, just to throw it out uneaten because the person they cooked it for doesn't want it (drama) or someone else ordered pizza (comedy). Just put in the fridge and eat it later, ffs!
On Game of Thrones, 'Will they, won't they' takes the form of 'Will they or won't they kill everyone and/or chop off various body parts?' And the answer to that one is always 'Yes, they will.'
In soap operas, that's no guarantee at all that he won't turn up again, or that the mother wouldn't suddenly have a change of heart and try to track him down. Fortunately, Mad Men is not a soap opera.
That shot of the five partners looking out alone.
We led to believe that at the beginning of season 2 (deliberately or not - I'm not sure). But as the season progresses, it becomes clear that the kid is no longer in Peggy's life, and was probably adopted by strangers.
I've stopped trying to figure out what exactly Regina and Angelo's relationship status is, and where Regina lives. Are they still romantically involved? Or living together platonically? Or living together at all? If Regina isn't living in the Kennish guest house, does Daphne live there alone? (Adriana doesn't seem to…
Oh god, it never even crossed my mind that Toby and Sharee could be attracted to each other. I sincerely hope that the show doesn't go there. Toby is too decent a guy to cheat on his wife; and it would ruin his teacher-student dynamic with Sharee.
I don't remember too many individual episodes in season 2 - but that's because I saw it only once, and that too a year ago. I've seen season 1 three times, including along with these reviews. So, for me, the two aren't comparable in that sense.
Don's affairs is what keeps the seasons straight for me
Betty is presented in such childlike visuals in this episode. That hand-holding scene is one obvious example. Then there's the scene in which she phones the psychiatrist. She's sitting cross-legged on the floor, and the camera shows her through the bannisters … it's almost as if she's inside a playpen. It also harks…
I would give the season a B+ grade. I found the early part of the season to be not that great. 'Babylon' was the first stand out episode for me (even on rewatch). Even after that the quality was uneven - 'Shoot' was great, 'Long Weekend' was ok. The last two episodes are fantastic, of course. But on the whole, the…
That's a good way to put it. Don's fake* memories look realer than his real life.
Thanks for the warning! I was planning to show it to my friend to get her to understand what's so great about Mad Men.
I hope the child never turns up again - it would be too soap-opera-ish if he did. Even worse would be if Peggy wanted to search for him. But it might be interesting if Peggy talked about her pregnancy with either Pete or Don in season 7 - I would like to know what she thinks about it 8 years down the line.
In the first couple of seasons, Stuart was a good example of a a successful, self-confident nerd. And as one who was comfortable being who he was, he was an interesting contrast to Leonard, who seemed perpetually ashamed of being a nerd. Now, Stuart seems one step away from suicide at all times.
