I completely agree. I think that their relationship was badly written. We only saw glimpses of them spending time together, but there were very few scenes that really showed how close they were or why they should be in love. I always felt like there was something missing.

Exactly. This film struck me as a love letter to Scotland, and to Edinburgh in particular. The city is such an important part of the film, and it's rendered with so much affection. It's odd that it goes unmentioned in the review.
