They've mentioned a few times that the closer you get to the center of the galaxy the more alien things get, and they've purposely only shown the most earth-like planets/creatures so far because they want people to discover the coolest stuff for themselves.

Yeah I think that's what did it for me, the look of overwhelming wonder and joy on everyone's face. It could have been used as a plot device but instead it plays as a celebration of human life, which is honestly really refreshing.

Actually all the films do follow a single plot (though its pretty convoluted), even the spinoff, which connected to the first one though fucking time travel of all things. I believe the main girl from the first movie has appeared in all the others as well.
