I interviewed Altman for PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION in 2006, and I was stunned at how readily he discussed his own mortality. I was trying to raise the subject delicately, and he snapped, "For me, the movie's about death. Nobody's said much about that."

Totally agree. No Country and Burn even end the same way, with an inconclusive attempt to put a frame around the preceding horrors. Except in Burn, it's played as a horribly sick joke rather than an existential crisis.
