I think she's fantastic in JUNO, and in fact is the reason that movie works at all. Remove that character and it's as insufferably smug as its critics claim.

"Effective" if I was trying to help the filmmakers figure out where they went wrong, maybe, but not in attempting to convey the depth (for me, obvs) of the film's loathesomeness. I went the latter course.

I think the difference is that the dorky-looking character is the love object and not the hero—it's not "dorky boy wins pretty girl." And for a cartoon character, Mavis is fairly normal-looking as well.

The timing is one of things I most value in Hotel Transylvania. I can't think of a recent animated movie, or almost any movie, that executes the comic beats—including the pulse of dead air after a joke lands—as well.

Between Sandler haters and Tartakovsky fans, I think the movie is getting hit with confirmation bias from both ends. I think it's incredibly funny much of the time, although Tahsa is correct that  the sub-Madagascar ending totally blows.
