Great review
After suffering through Slate's horrific excuse for a review, I'm relieved to find that at least The AV Club can be counted on for a thoughtful, well-written review that actually bothers to address the major plot points of the show. Well done, sir.
Agreed. Loved the line, and I loved the way the show just sort of let it sit there without a big reaction from the other characters. It trusts the viewer to understand with that small line just how much of a gigantic nerd Ben is. LOVE.
"Campbell Bower is England's answer to Matthew Lillard, only with slightly less gravitas. "
I do agree that Chris's character is abit shoe-horned in. I think he runs the risk of being fairly one note as well - he's so goddamn upbeat that it's hard to tell when he's having a moment that a normal person would consider truly sincere. I also think he's too loosely tied to the rest of the cast - he loves…
I kept waiting for Lithgow to tell Barney, "Shut up, cunt."
Jennifer Beals' accent is almost killing my ability to watch this show. It's super distracting.
I agree that The Middle is a great and realistic depiction of a lower class family. There was a good episode where Sue had to save and scrape just to afford the cool jeans that other kids were wearing, and there was another fairly hilarious episode involving Frankie's desire for a new dryer that she couldn't afford.
Eden Sher is a pretty brilliant physical comedienne. Her flailing around in the episode where she tries out for the swim team just genius. I also love how she totally commits to Sue's irrepressible sunny nature - keeps the character from being too pathetic.
I would assume another factor would be that Olivia Munn can't act for shit.
Agreed. Amy Ryan is delightful and the way that she plays off of Steve Carell when they're making dorky jokes and puns together is just brilliant.
I think I would have enjoyed it even more if they had dragged the joke out over a few episodes. Britta strikes me as the kind of person who would get herself into a lesbian relationship just to make a point. It would have been funny to see her pushing it further to the extreme over the course of several episodes.
One of my favorite Elaine moments
Julia Louis-Dreyfus's line reading of "Fake. Fake. Fake fake fake!" along with her hand gestures is one of the great bits of dialogue in the history of the show. I love the glee she takes in rubbing it in to Jerry.
I agree that Linda F is sex personified. I liked her in this, Dogma and Men In Black. However, I think part of the reason her career never really took off was that she is allegedly really difficult to work with on set. Kevin Smith is on record as stating that (as much as you trust his opinion). I thought it was…
I'm just saying - they keep making the joke, but not actually backing it up with visual evidence. All I see are people who (aside from Donna and Jerry) could maybe qualify as "Hollywood fat" (e.g. women who wear size 4)
Where are the fatties?
The town slogan is "First in friendship, fourth in obesity," and yet there has been a suspicious lack of chunky people in the episodes we've seen so far. I mean, I think Pawnee's obesity epidemic is a hilarious running joke, but the actual town citizens we've come across have been largely…
Perfect Couples is freaking dreadful, but I must admit that last night's episode wasn't that bad. I realized that if I didn't hate all the characters so much, I might have enjoyed it. The structure and premise was sort of fun, and the storyline involving the Waitress was semi-depraved enough that it gave me happy…
Pyramid of Greatness
Dear NBC,
If the show had kept the relationship with Spike as an example "the guy you like even though he's wrong for you" I think I would have been fine with it. The problem was that the show tried to have it both ways - In S5, Spike is literally a panty-stealing stalker who has no chance with her, with his "love" for Buffy…
I agree - the first Charlie's Angels movie was pure fluffy movie fun done right. I thought the three leads had good chemistry, the movie never tried to take itself too seriously, and the double punch of Glover/Rockwell (plus dominatrix Kelly Lynch) injected just enough weirdness to please me.
