Huh, good point, I didn't realize 2011 did things similar, though I still think having bonafide sci-fi movies (and not in the Solaris talky mold) in 2010 was pretty significant. Though I guess Inception falls under that category, as much as it doesn't *look* like a sci-fi film.

I understand your optimism, but I just think the Academy is really stuck in its ways and 2010 (like 2004) was a really weird outlier where they suddenly decided to nominate crowd-pleasing films. I just don't know what the Academy would make of the Avengers. I could see TDKR getting several nominations, though.

Unless Avengers 2 is somehow a TDK-styled masterpiece from nowhere, I doubt the Avengers series will get any substantial nominations until the third flick is out and the trilogy done.

Avatar got nominated in the most populist Academy Awards ceremony since the one where Return of the King won every Oscar. The other Best Picture nominations that year were Up, District 9, and a motherfucken Tarantino film. No chance of that replaying again in a long time, sorry. Though maybe TDKR will win several…

I guess Americans in general are pretty blase about security cameras in public places, because of our awful crime and lax gun control laws a camera in bad places can be thought of as the main deterrent against getting mugged or having our stuff stolen.

I wonder if this means that high school is made more miserable because everyone secretly thought they were the only unique snowflake, and that everyone else was sheeple.
