It doesn't have to appeal, but it should at least be understandable. Shakespeare's ultimate success was being equally approachable from people of all levels of society. James Joyce, not so much.

I really don't understand how seemingly unreadable (to the layman) works such as Gravity's Rainbow, or Ulysses, or books that are incredibly high concept, such as Infinite Jest, are seen as literary masterpieces. The last one not in the same class as the previous two, of course. It seems like they're so full of hidden
