I'm starting to think this is what's going on. I really hope this series gets picked up!

What if The Tick is Arthur's subconscious heroic desire actually physically manifested? This could explain how others can see him and he can take action, even when Arthur is sleeping. Arthur could have a real superpower and this is how it manifests.

After watching this a second time I got the impression that a couple of the scenes in the middle were switched around slightly. Or maybe the editing is just awkward, I don't know. But I think maybe the show wanted us to think The Tick was a figment early on, and then dispel it when Arthur wakes up next to him,

I'm looking forward to the "Devil's Rejects". That was one surprisingly good genre film. Especially after the weak "House of 1,000 Corpses".
