The Wisdom of Phipps
I love that Keith is assuming the role of wise soothsayer who shows up briefly at the end of the AVQ&A to dispense nuggets of wisdom. Your second sentence is one of the truest things about friendship I've ever read.
Respect to the Handlen
Handlen, I opened this article hoping you would use "The Tingler" as the gateway to geekery, and lo and behold. I am proud of you. Did you know that both John Waters and Stuart Gordon listed "The Tingler" among their top 10 favorite films of all time in a Sight and Sound poll? Good company.
x1735, I appreciate your support. I've been lacking in inspiration lately but I promise that more stories will be forthcoming.
The book has an interesting premise, but it's mostly sentimental and simplistic as Bernice says. I think this could be one of those cases where a filmmaker makes great art out of pop mediocrity, a la The Godfather.
Cool Guy
Giamatti is such a cool guy. It's a pity that Cold Souls is getting lukewarm reviews. He needs another American Splendor-type vehicle to display his awesomeness.
Matchstick Men
The rising tide of anti-Cage rhetoric is indeed somewhat misguided. The man has done far more good than evil. Nathan, I'm pleased to see you praise the wonderful "Matchstick Men," a film that I wish more people talked about. Cage at his best, Sam Rockwell as his partner, an absolutely delicious…
Long
Mr. Van Der Werff's TV writeups are very long. Why waste nine paragraphs on a show you don't even like?
The Zohan
Although I have great fondness for Punch Drunk Love and look forward to seeing Funny People, Adam Sandler's greatest achievement will always be the hilarious, underappreciated You Don't Mess With The Zohan. That movie has a million hilarious things going on and doesn't fit in with any of the shitty modes of…
Poor Nathan
Nathan is really getting stuck with the gutless, artless indie films lately — Shrink, Answer Man, and now this. Keith should've thrown him a bone with the new Park Chan-wook or something.
Not In My Airforce
Pollard's best solo album is Not In My Airforce. Not necessarily the best place to start, but it holds up next to most GBV releases.
Dylan Kidd disappoints
How could the man behind the exuberant, pulsating, beautiful Roger Dodger be responsible for this plodding failure? A terribly disappointing follow-up to one of the best debut films of the decade. And we haven't heard from him since…
Japan
I have not visited Japan but my first wife was of Japanese heritage. Her mother was born there; her father was from Columbus, Ohio. Through the random trading of genetic features my first wife ended up favoring her father more than her mother, and thus looked solidly American with only faint hints of the…
Straight to video
In the late 1980s I met my second wife at a video store. She, a pretty young thing working behind the counter (I won't reveal the disparity in our ages, but it was substantial), was engaged in an abusive relationship with the store manager at the time that I met her. This unsavory man was always…
Comedy
As a younger man I once attended a comedy open mic night. I did not perform but sat in the back and witnessed other young men making terrible fools of themselves. One of these miscreants spent at least five minutes (it felt like five hours) describing the veins of his erect member. He then forcefully…
Press release
That press release sounds like it was written at "Fish Time" if you catch my drift.
Mbs, you are young. Such thoughts don't belong inside you yet. I am an old man. Time affords both misery and introspection; youth has no place for either one. Don't let yourself get Othermotherfucked by life yet.
First?
You've been Othermotherfucked.
The gay nineties
The 1990s was a time of unvarnished misery and attempted forgetting. My second marriage had failed and I had not yet discovered the twin consolations of interlibrary loan and internet pornography. I was either unemployed or making wages sweeping up popcorn and other detritus at a neighborhood movie…
