It's from a traditional ghost story. There's a version of it in this book: http://www.amazon.ca/In-A-D… (my five year old loves ghost stories), I'm sure there are lots of others.

When I was a kid (like, thirteen or something, I don't remember), I binge-read dozens of my mom's old Agatha Christie books one summer, until I ended up having a nightmare where a sweet little old lady suddenly pulled a knife and tried to kill me. I almost never get nightmares, so it really freaked me out.

I've plugged this here before, but if you like classic ghost stories, hunt down a book called "Black Spirits and White" by Ralph Adams Cram. It's the only fiction he ever wrote (he was actually an architect) and it only has six stories, but three of the six are flat-out masterpieces.

My favourite MR James story is one about a bunch of boy scouts and a well. I don't remember the title off the top of my head, but the fact that he actually wrote it to read out at a boy scout jamboree adds a little touch of sadism to his personality. "Well, that's it, good night boys!"

Glad to see another Manila fan. She and Latrice were definitely my favourites going in, so I was pleased to see them paired together. Still, I kind of hate this pairs concept.

It's a sad state when Taylor Schilling is priced out of your league.

You spelt "Butters" wrong.

@munigant:twitter That is fascinating and bizarre. Outside my wife and I (and apart from this board), I've met only two other people who watch Castle, and they like it for the same reason as we do (when we do): because Fillion is infinitely charming, the banter is fun, and the creaky mysteries bring up pleasant…

I think so. And this is easily the best use of the HII (on the producer's part) since, like, Exile Island.
