I had a used Mk 1 GTI as my first car and swapped out the heavy US bumpers for the euro ones saving 100+ pounds, great car very easy to toss around, poor brakes medium speed. Put a twin tube down pipe and Technics Tuning (sp?) exhaust to wake it up a bit.
