Not necessarily...I used to pull the driveshafts and flat tow a Jeep YJ. The initial setup with the tow bar was a couple of hundred bucks, which is about the same cost as a decent bike rack.
Or just make their (our) off road rigs into trailer queens. It’s not so bad, really, I already treat my mountain bike and my kayak like trailer queens until I get to the trailhead/put-in. My jeep and my samurai should be treated so well...
