NASCAR, IndyCar, etc. use 15" wheels, and those brakes seem to hold up fine to extreme duty use. Why do “enthusiasts” think they need GIANT brake calipers?

Not necessarily...I used to pull the driveshafts and flat tow a Jeep YJ.   The initial setup with the tow bar was a couple of hundred bucks, which is about the same cost as a decent bike rack.

Or just make their (our) off road rigs into trailer queens.  It’s not so bad, really, I already treat my mountain bike and my kayak like trailer queens until I get to the trailhead/put-in.  My jeep and my samurai should be treated so well...
