In hindsight, I think Giles should have died in "The Gift" instead of Buffy. ASH could have still spent more time with his family, Buffy's depression could still be justified, with her losing her father figure and mother in the span of a month, and Giles' lack of reasonable explanation for leaving wouldn't have needed…
