I don’t think it had so much to do with contact with the ground and more about minimizing dirty air to the rear wing (by having smaller front wheels). To quote The Wikipedia:

I think yours needs some tuning up. Bleed the steering, replace and bleed the clutch, drain the trans and give it some fresh oil, and tighten all the shift linkages.
