I’m grateful that this adaptation happened. It was never dull to watch, and often the most visually captivating series currently running, brimming with wit and imagination. Despite its Gorey-esque tone and macabre and cynical leanings, I don’t think I can call it a pessimistic series.
Yes, authority and institution

The reveal that the Man with a Beard but No Hair and the Woman with Hair but No Beard were actually, legitimately the other two judges- not in disguise, not playacting- was such a dark turn, particularly when followed by the kindhearted but naive Justice Strauss hopelessly imploring the siblings to trust the law.

Yeah, that’s been the vibe of these reviews going back to the start... a kind of basic rejection of the show’s premise itself and then criticizing the show for committing to it.

This is really... meager... as far as reviews here go. It doesn’t even mention the fact the episode is a musical episode featuring the guest voices of folks like Daveed Diggs and Andrew Rannells.

I would love a lip sync with the enforced challenge of a ban or limit on costume reveals or acrobatics. Eureka and Kameron pretty much spammed their moves over and over (and Kameron’s lip syncs in the season revealed she has a very limited movepool). And Asia’s butterfail- geez.

I thought Springfield was America’s scrod basket?

The qualifier is more than a little arbitrary. “Itchy and Scratchy Land” and “Summer of 4’2” capture family vacations so much better than nearly all of these- especially the latter! The beach town may not be a real place, but that is because it is literally every single beach town.

Oy, the people bringing in the “this is like the witch trials!” nonsense.

What stared off as an exciting and excellent group of queens turned into a very humdrum season in which I don’t really care who wins.

The bar that Blanca is kicked out of is actually the historic Julius’ in the West Village. It was the site of the Mattachine Society’s sip-in in 1966 in protest of the state liquor authority’s regulation that allowed gay clientele to be kicked out of bars by considering them “disorderly.” So a nice bit of irony there

If it’s any consolation, I have heard he is not great in bed.

Linda and the kids eagerly chanting, “Herpes, herpes, hooray!” while Bob begrudgingly goes along with it pretty much encapsulates everything great about the show.

Eureka looked like the goddamn Witch of the Wastes on that runway.

... so they’re keeping Homer’s childhood firmly in the 60s while pushing his marriage and fatherhood into the late 90s?

I liked the Vixen initially, but as weeks have gone in she went from someone who was fiercely speaking an uncomfortable truth to just being an aggressive shitstirrer and master of projection. I wish Monique knew those fucking lyrics.

Bryce of the Pit Crew made for a more interesting muscle queen than Kameron Michaels.

I read the review before I saw that episode, and I was shocked by how benign it was. And the review very conspicuously downplayed Harris’ truly reprehensible behavior.

These reviews may as well open with a disclaimer that says, “I have decided I don’t like this revival due to Roseanne’s politics but I am being told I need to do reviews due to the show’s popularity.”

We’ve entered a period where sci-fi or fantasy thinks it has to be VERY SERIOUS to be taken seriously.

This seems part and parcel of current-day The Simpsons trolling its audience. There’s a real sense of contempt for people who care about the show, whether it’s as a fan or as a critic.
