And its not just lack of media representation for the students of color. That’s bad enough. The media also needs to take some responsibility for uplifting the Parkland students and constantly referring to them as brave and smart, while at the same time vilifying BLM, for basically saying the same thing.

This is how to be an ally. Recognizing one’s privilege, and not feeling guilty and defensive about , but using it to help bring some other people’s truths to the light, and calling out the ignorance at the same time.

They came prepared, too. They came prepared with a diversity of speakers, from different cities, with different stories – but in service of a common goal, to fight for something better

I think it was the Time cover/similar levels of media that made them realize that Aaliyah Eastmond was getting cut out of media portrayal and they have been trying to signal boost her without putting her life in danger.

People of color in this country, in this culture, tend to not matter as much as those who are white; that is the truth of America. In the Black Lives Matter movement, young black people have been shouting from the rooftops until their voices are raw and hoarse, and America hasn’t listened. But now that it’s white kids

They’re right about that, too. I was about to do a piece about that, but I’m glad I waited - the kids beat me to it. So I’ll just put a few of the “greatest hits” here, since the kids are clearly making an effort and IMO deserve our support: PWMC, #RepresentationMatters Division: MSNBC Anchors Have Given

I can smell the patchouli and b.o. from here.

Business in the front. Vision quest in the back.

Nothing wrong with believing in conspiracies. Just stop calling it the Illuminati. There’s no secret society. People are doing it right in front of you, on the record, with no shame.

You eyeballin’ my penny?

They’re afraid of them. If they weren’t, they would just ignore them instead of trying to discredit and dismiss them..

Or alternately, because this is yet another example of white people doing something that black people have been doing for a while, at which point people actually start giving a shit. #MeToo was started by a black woman years ago, but it didn’t take off until a white woman took it up. Black kids have been walking out

The funniest* thing to me is how many conservatives are ripping these kids, calling them spoiled, dismissing them, etc.

I’m glad your friends are simply surprised by their children’s awareness and activism and not skeptical. Last week, kids all over Baltimore walked out of school and marched to city hall to protest gun violence. The march was posted by a local news source in Facebook live. I was livid by how many comments I saw from

while i’m sure you have your reasons, i think the real target of michael’s criticism here is less the white kids who protest and more the white people who only notice when they do.

You are right on all counts. I also absolutely believe that the OJ Simpson case should have been an opening to the way we address domestic abuse, and the killing of wives, in this culture. Nicole Brown wasn’t just a white woman killed by a black man; she was an ex-wife killed by an abusive ex-husband, and that is all

You can believe several things at once. You can believe that police shouldn’t shoot innocent black men. You can believe that people, period, shouldn’t be shooting other people. You can believe that the Rodney King verdict, which influenced the verdict in the Simpson case, was a mockery of justice. You can also believe

And yet I would still pick Florida over Texas anyday of the week. Seriously, when you Texan cowards seceding? Is it never, because you don’t have the guts to go it alone? You afraid that nobody would fight to keep you if you stormed off, well you are right. Florida at least has entertainment value, Texas is worthless.
