Have you seen Zhang Yimou’s other movies? They do tend to give multiple characters focus—see Hero or Curse of the Golden Flower. It’s really not hard to imagine what he’s talking about if you’ve seen those movies.

Which is great and all, but shouldn’t the director, and the actor hired to do this international exposure, kind of at least acknowledge it?

IDK. I appreciate the director’s comments on this. It’s at least good that we are having dialogue about these things. That’s what really annoys me about Damon. He’s so dismissive of people’s criticism.
