They help when they are taught. The problem comes when it is so easy to get a gun and there is little to no training or instruction involved in even getting it. That's where the issue lies, and that's where legislators should be stepping in (but aren't due to lobbying efforts).

This is why Canada has laws about the transport of guns. Locked cabinets. Safeties engaged. No rounds in the chamber, and ammo stored separately.
