What good does it do to replace an elector after the vote is cast? Point being, pledge or no, they can vote for anyone. Should their state decide to enforce a law about breaking their pledge, they can sue to challenge that law if they choose.

They can still pledge one thing and do another, can’t they? Ray v. Blair doesn’t address the requirement that electors actually vote the same as they pledged.
