Excellent advice, thank you. My writing has been mostly stream-of-consciousness and then I go back to fix/cite, as it's a scientific dissertation. Feel free to PM me if you need to rant/vent/whatever.

Hey, ya'll-just venting about dissertation writing. I'm working on my 4th chapter (not written chapter 3 yet; chapter 2 is written and my advisor currently has my Introduction). I feel like what I've written so far sucks but I'm also sick with a pretty awful cold. Just trying to get this stuff down on paper and…
What are you cooking tonight/this weekend?
Science grad school Jezzies, I need your help! If this is too late, I'll post this again next Saturday. Those of you who have finished their PhDs (Mazel Tov!) I have a question about writing your dissertation. I want to finish by May, which means, I know, a lot of writing (I get it-oh GOD). I have 1 chapter…
Oh and my sympathies to you at the Atlanta airport-no free wifi :(. I suppose you're posting from your smartphone, eh?
Yeah the livestream kept stopping so I missed a few minutes of the original broadcast.
I'm dealing with similar issues. I just downloaded the Self Control app (Cold Turkey for Mac) and it helped me focus and finish reading a paper. The people who helped you with procrastination may have a tip for me: how do I get my advisor to allow me to get my dissertation through without her having me rewrite the…
Grad student here, so I'm salaried and have an experiment ending tomorrow. I'm currently working out a schedule for my husband to get things in the oven/cooking so I can get home at around 1:00 and finish everything so we can eat at around 2:00. I'm prepping a lot of things today (turkey, rolls, stuffing).
I flew back from San Diego on Wednesday from a work conference and was so jet-lagged on Friday during a full work day that I had to lie down in our meeting area on the couches. Luckily, I am in grad school so we frequently do have people lying there, sound asleep. I didn't really sleep, I just rested my eyes and…
Jezzies, what is everyone cooking tonight? I did not make dinner but I made the apple crumble posted yesterday on Gawker and Pioneer Woman's hard sauce (basically whiskey buttercream to which I added some maple syrup) to put on top of it. Yes, it was a long day.
That's an accurate description. I just don't see what new evidence could have been brought to life that would merit a retrial.
I listened to an NPR story on the case-it's not entirely clear if it's double jeopardy by U.S. law. Her case was overturned on appeal, but she wasn't found not guilty. I think the whole thing is a kangaroo court in terms of the satanic cult theory and the fact that Rudy Guede has already been convicted of Meredith…

I have read about the consequences of pregnancy in space. It's...not pretty, from what I can remember; there have been studies of rats or mice giving birth in space. Developing fetuses need gravity to develop properly, as gene expression is affected by gravity. That combined with the weird effects on blood pressure in…
Seconded. There was an accusation that some of Amanda Knox's DNA was on a bra strap/clasp of Kercher's, but I believe that turned out to be contamination by police picking up the bra with dirtied gloves. As you said, the incompetent police force completely botched the whole investigation.
Odd Girl Out? The one with that girl from Spy Kids, is that the cyberbullying one? I'm sure there are others, but that's the one that comes to mind.
I would think so. Are there seminal research articles in your field that you can sort of work forward from? For example, my lab studies a certain part of the brain and an aim of my quals proposal involved that region. So I reviewed all the major research for that brain region, back to the 1970s. But what you're…
Yeah, the commute in Atlanta is KEEPING me from getting a dog, though I want one SO bad. I live in Duluth, commute to downtown Atlanta for grad school. Some weeks I'm at school 10-12 hours a day doing research, some weeks I have a light schedule. But my husband has a really busy schedule too and though I want a dog…
Yep, you're justified in taking the night off. I had a much better time with my comps (well, they were quals, but similar to comps) than with my proposal. I froze up for the first 5-10 minutes of presenting it and couldn't remember the results from old research in our field and felt like SUCH an idiot. I still…
