Well, it's kind of "God I hope it's not true" = "I hope the victim is not actually a victim, and is instead a liar". Sometimes I don't want something to be true, not because I want someone to be a liar, but because I don't want the bad event to have happened in the first place.

What lay people seem to inherently misunderstand about the justice system is this: testimony is evidence. "There is no proof." Yes, yes there is. There is also "contrary proof," i.e., Cosby's testimony. But, in weighing the evidence, one seems more credible to me.
