I heard about this this morning on the Diane Rehm show. They re-did social studies books last year and apparently put slavery as the third contributing factor to the civil war with state’s rights being the first. Also they removed Jim Crow and the KKK from those books as well.

I think of that sometimes when I look at my students. Most of them are boys. Most of them are black and low income. They also have learning disabilities and/or “conduct disorders,” i.e. emotional issues. The deck is stacked against them. They are just kids, but not for long.
