I was mostly surprised by the stated demographic. If I were in a high income bracket, I'm pretty sure I could find less harmful ways to escape reality.

Also, for folks on Public Aid, Medicaid, etc your chances of getting a Doctor's script for painkillers (at least in my state) are practiclly nill. I know a number of people who really don't have much of a choice.

Personally, I believe the world has gone so mad that folks are nearing the ends of their ropes. Pretty much an Existential problem, it seems. The world has always been a hard old place; we are just getting more efficient at self-punishment, maybe?

I do this kind of work on a volunteer basis for one of our city's rather smallish organizations. Most of these kids never had much of a chance from the get-go. They are encouraged to work toward the GED examinations and we help them with this as much as we can. Many have been homeless, are still on drugs or come in…
