Purely fermented beverages are very difficult to get above about 15% ABV. The alcohol kills the yeast that are producing it (it is their waste product, after all). Expensive craft beers that get in the 15 - 20% range require very special yeast selected for high alcohol tolerance, for example.
But I like to think maybe they were distant cousins, or friends from high school, or something.
