Yes they are and there is nothing wrong with that. There is a lot right with that, in fact.

If I were in Vegas, I'd put money down on a big reveal at the end of the Tourney. Something like Sakurai himself picking up a controller and challenging the winner with a new character reveal.

I'm with you there. I just hope this is more of an experiment that doesn't really take off. It won't ruin the game by any means at all, but it is an odd decision.

I'm in the same boat as your friend, actually. I recently inherited a PS3 because my cousin got a PS4 (inb4 "joke's on him") and now I'm scrambling all over obtaining and/or borrowing games across the PS3's history. I'm looking forward to playing what I've missed while I was busy being a 360 fanboy.
