Like most films, it was filmed on a Toronto-styled soundstage inside a Vancouver BC-styled backlot, located in a redressed city in Romania.

Looks like the whole movie was filmed in Toronto... 

I really like 3D Realms’ return to form by making what amounts to period pieces.

Could be the dawn of the Second Age, maybe? Humans still almost exclusively confined to Numenor, dwarves only recently waking up after their god-induced coma, Sauron slowly insinuating himself into human affairs and ‘helping’ the world by firing up the old magic smelter and cranking out new Rings of Power...

In fact, the pic the Amazon LoTR account tweeted out yesterday was of Middle Earth in the early Third Age, complete with Minas Anor, Minas Ithil, and the absence of trees in either Enedwaith or Minhiriath, and Khazad-Dum identified as Moria.   

The forests of Enedwaith and Minhiriath were pretty far gone by 1500-1600. The Numenoreans started cutting them down in 800, so it may hint at an even earlier setting.

I say this not out of cruelty, but out of genuine awe at your being able to deduce all that from this one map:

The nice thing about having immortal characters like Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-Galad, etc is that they could do massive time-jumps between seasons. One season could be the forging of the Rings of Power, the next could be Ar-Pharazon and the downfall of the Numenoreans, the next could be the War of the Last Alliance, etc.

Armies of balrogs, a dragon the size of a mountain, a fight between the most powerful elf warrior and a demigod...yeah, probably not great on the ol’ budget. 

We get hot sauron, Elves and Humans at their height of power, encounters with full form Maiar and Valar.

Like I mentioned in the article at AVClub, judging from the fact that the great forests of Eriador are still intact and the Kingdom of Eregion is clearly labelled, but Mordor is left blank, it would seem that the map portrays a time period somewhere around 1,500 S.A., or during the creation of the Rings of Power, and…

The First Age is just brutal period.

The Second Age really would be a great period for a series. I mean, First would be fucking amazing, but Second is probably a bit less brutal on the ol’ effects budget.

Do celebrities make an inordinate amount of money compared to the vast majority of the population? Yes. Is working a press circuit for months at a time a wildly mentally and emotionally draining experience? Also yes. Both things can be true.

That’s if he was lying at the time, of course. Who is to say that THIS isn’t the lie meant to cover up a slip?
