on the Atrix, at least, the a Root program has an option to enable sideloading. The checkbox never shows up, but it behaves as if it's checked.

Except it varies based on air density, which varies based on altitude.

Well, more than single point of contact, the real savior is time of deceleration. A hard floor causes much faster deceleration, thus more g's. Something soft, say, leaves, slows the falling object down over a longer time, thus the g's are reduced.
