DVRs tend to have hard drives optimized for Media, which tend to be more expensive than normal run of the mill $89 2TB drives. 500GB records a pretty decent amount of video.. it's a good tradeoff between price and size for this application.

It's worth noting that today, the "Hardware Acceleration for UI" issue was marked resolved in Android 3.0. Finally, GPU acceleration!
