We were doing better out here until LA priced so many people out of living situations that they moved out here and brave the commute.
I remember, fresh out of prison, the ad campaign for this movie had billboards all over SoCal with “Gump Happens” on them as the tag line and being hugely perplexed as to how the fuck they got Tom Hanks to do a movie about a prison gay man.
California can play dress up as this advanced liberal haven, but when the fist meats the flesh, all the weight is swung by the public service unions. If the police, firefighter or teachers unions aren’t on board, nothing’s going to get moved.

I’m glad they’re concerned about serving their sentence, as they should be. However, for their conviction type and length of term, they’re not really going to get the full experience. Hell, they might not even make it through classification from their intake facility and get shipped out to their ‘home’ location…
I refuse to think that’s an unpopular opinion, really. That movie was seriously underrated for what it was trying to do, for sure, though.
