I think the reason I classed them together is that Mac generally wears his emotions on his sleeve (because he's so desperately needy), so anything that focuses on him at all essentially gets inside his head. You're totally right though, there's a genuine distinction there I wasn't considering.

After the woman's head in the freezer gag from Chardee MacDennis 2 I'm halfway convinced that they're just doing a real slow burn up to the revelation that Dennis was secretly the serial killer from that episode the whole time.

The progressive degradation of Cricket is probably one of the most reliably funny running gags in the whole series.
