Ah I know its cliche to want a tree planted over your dead body, but now I want a tree planted over my body so that in couple hundred years maybe my skeleton can scare someone when the tree falls over.

but acknowledge that the legality of such licenses is unclear

I’ll concede that acknowledging local struggles on a global stage is good for the movement, in general terms. But there is a strong western bias in the comments that is not getting put in its place. I am not silencing Reshma, I am trying to silence those who would like to shout above her about how much pain they feel

I was linked this comment and I should have know this had to do with an article about India. When it comes to India, Jez is the very worst. I’ve never seen such blatant racism from people calling themselves feminist unless it is toward India.

I have so many similar anecdotes but from Kerala. The patriarchy is fucked up but us brown savages don’t need Colonial-style Enlightenment.

I don’t think these posts actually do any good. I think they are more harmful as they create unrealistic impressions of other cultures and encourage American Exceptionalism. See all the commentators who are posting about how ALL Indian men are misogynistic and then look at how many stars these comments receive and the

When people try to pull this “India needs feminism more than the US” bullshit, I remind them my grandmother became a physician and anesthesiologist in India (in a city which would become Pakistan after the partition) in the 1940s. I know it’s a single case I present, but I don’t know how many women were doing that in

I’m also super into hearing the opinions of the white ladies who went to India once and are now card-carrying experts on all the various issues of “that country” and perfectly poised to dispense well-meaning advice.

Oh, no, I’m with you there. I don’t think it’s a Muslim, Hindu, or an Indian cultural thing. It’s a patriarchal, misogynistic thing. In America, we use guns or knives for that sort of thing.

Jezebel has a huge race problem. I know a lot of the commenters here are very smug in their feminism and progressiveness, but I don’t see much of a difference between some of you and the commenters on Fox News. And I can at least excuse some of the Fox News people on the grounds that they’re uneducated and don’t know

It’s frustrating seeing videos like these posted for clicks and comments on Jezebel. This video was not made to enlighten the West about acid attacks. It is part of a local campaign to put pressure on government officials to regulate the sale of acids. This is missed by the commenters, who eat this stuff up with a

I know right. White Feminism strikes again. I’m sure the woman thought she was really helping out Indian women by doing that.

all their “anecdotes” about how all their business interactions with Indians go bad and how most Indian men are pigs *barf*

I’m pretty sure I saw something you wrote a few weeks back on lots of Jezzies being racist towards Indians and by jove you are RIGHT. The comments I’m reading are gross.

Folks at Jez haven’t figured out a way to discuss the misogyny of Indian culture without being self righteous and racist about it.

This. The comments above trouble me.

Awesome men of many nationalities rarely make the news. Bad men do. We have acid attacks in the UK as well - some of whom are by done by women and men. See the cases of Naomi Oni and Katie Piper.

On a related note, in my opinion, whoever invented the hot fudge brownie sundae should get a Nobel Prize for it, even if the Nobel Prize Committee has to come up with a new category in order to do that.

Bless your heart.

Wrong India, Columbus.
