Government agencies are accountable to the government, which is accountable (in theory) to voters, and to the law (again in theory).

So this is a worse version of Terminator: Salvation? At least that had moments of really junky-fun action and Christian Bale looking like he’s auditioning for the role of Most Serious Man Ever. And the MVP, Korinna Moon Bloodgood!

If the film had taken place in the Ian Bank’s Culture universe, it would have been.

Or... Alexa or Siri.

Uh, empathy? Really? For a guy who supported a movement that included death threats, rape threats, harassment, doxxing, and even swatting against people for their beliefs, race and gender? Where was people’s sense of empathy then?

I appreciate Anderson but there are moments when I feel he’s sucked every ounce of glucose out of the frame, through the over-symmetrical and over-thought composition.

A couple of thoughts:

I came looking for the first liberal arts-bashing comment. Didn’t have to look for. Congratulations! Yes, a world full of construction managers, that’s what we need. Go you!

Considering that companies don’t want to match or even pay benefits, and are hellbent on contracting out work/Uberizing themselves; salaries have been flat after inflation for 30+ years; collective bargaining is almost nonexisting in this country; a lot of people graduating from college wtihin the last 10+ years has

That movie is great. Also, I don’t understand why people are so down on First Class when it was the first non-Wolverine centered X-Men movie, and actually was better for it.

Nope. Police do have discretion. Police dispatchers have very limited authority - it varies tremendously from district to district, but in most cases they have to send a respondent.

You can see where they bad guys are, Batman actually, you know, moves (so many moments in Batman were about Batman barely moving, often sitting scowling in his cockpit), and there are actual moments of tension

Which is... still less than 5% of the $1.25 million that you’ll need to retire comfortably, according to 2015's Forbes (that’s now considered an underestimate by some sources, since Rx/medical costs are rising faster than expected).

There’s another dimension to this - the constant means-testing and judging of poor folks.

On tabloid size I hope. Full duplex.

PALATINO! Oh yeah, my favorite serif font. Palatino + Univers are a great combo.

I’m sure you’re right. It was so long ago - the dissertation typing was in the early-to-mid 70s, and she started doing graphic design, typesetting and still photography in the late 70s. I think her first newspaper gig was 80 or 81.

I just remembered - when she worked for a newspaper, my mom had to go back to double spacing. Newspapers expected it.

My mother used to type people’s dissertations on her manual (and later electric) typewriter to make extra money. (I’m 47). IIRC double-spacing was normal for dissertations back then. I started on a manual typewriter at about the same age as my mom got her first computer - so about 12, then switched to hand-me-down
