That’s why I say it’s a general rule of thumb. There was never any accepted definition of what constitute an SUV so we kinda have to wing it.

Rule of thumb : SUVs are body-on-frame and/or built on truck platforms, Crossovers are unibody and/or built on car platforms (they are often lifted wagons/hatches).

Because it’s a new word and people are not familiar with it yet. Crossovers are built on car platforms.
