Joel himself said the exact same thing. They were all done in order, and it took everyone a few episodes to really feel comfortable and not try to fill every single second of dead air.

I don’t think it really settled into the proper MST3k rhythm until the 3rd episode of season 11. The first 2 episodes were marred by there being just too damned many riffs per second, which is an odd complaint but true nevertheless.
