You're right in most cases, though it still is bad design. I've had multiple times where the map won't load even after a full minute.

I get what you're saying, but at the same time I feel their families is less important than their interactions with each other. And if they had you play as one at a time I feel it would diminish that interaction.

Something tells me that stuff like that will be up to the developers of games. But it seems like the technology is there for them to easily implement it.
