Honestly, I’m not sure whether there is or not. If I were in that position, I would have tried very hard to push for more inclusion, especially considering we are finally in a society where WOC stories are being told more often. Not including Kerry Washington, for example, is insane to me.

Really? Are you serious? So unless she dedicates her entire life to fighting racism in all of its incarnations, she’s not being a good enough white ally for you? Good to know. Because that is literally impossible.

Believe it or not, it’s possible to defend one white woman without defending all of white womankind. What exactly am I apologizing for? Your response seems petty and bitter and like an attempt to avoid actual conversation. I get that you’re angry, but attacking me isn’t going to resolve any of that.

She set herself up as a hero? Or she should have set herself up as a hero? Doing photo shoots is literally part of her job. All of us are obligated to do things as parts of our jobs that maybe we don’t agree with. All of us.

Of course they have that power, but we’re not talking about that, are we? Jessica Chastain has never auditioned for a POC role, as far as I know.

First off, I’m Jewish, so my comments are never going to be white feminism because they’re not coming from a white feminist.

I don’t think anyone is saying that. I’m Jewish-Ashkenazi, which means POC consider me white but most white people consider me to be not white. That leaves me in no man’s land, and yeah, it really sucks.

Maybe she has to play both sides to get along. Maybe she has to at least see to be playing the white supremacy side in order to keep her job.

I hear you. I do. I’m feeling particularly disempowered at this particular moment in my particular life, so that probably came out a little.

I don’t think she is acting like she has zero power, but she is required to do publicity for films she is in, and that includes magazine spreads. She didn’t cast the spread, didn’t decide who was in it. I have no idea whether Hollywood actresses get to choose what events they do and which they avoid, but I would guess

Ugh. C’mon, Lorde. Really? Are you planning to cancel your concerts in the U.S. because you disagree with Trump? What’s the difference? Significant portions of the Israeli populace disagree with their government’s actions, just like in the U.S. Why should the Israeli populace be lumped together with their government’s

I agree with you, but I think it’s a ridiculous situation. Actresses don’t really have any control over which actresses are cast in films, or which actresses wind up on the covers of magazines. Yet every white actress is being called upon to not just care about fighting racism, not just speak to it, but actively do so.

Actually, you did, because you didn’t leave off your reply with saying that. You went on to state outright that homophobia is not “written into America” in the way that racism is, which given the ongoing persecution of homosexuals and the way madness in women was conflated with queerness, particularly for impoverished

I have a lot of doubts about what you’ve said. I’ve encountered a ton of deeply embedded homophobia among liberals. I also don’t necessarily think it’s true that many or most liberals are more racist than they are homophobic, I think they lack the tools and language to talk about racism and therefore tend to sound

Is someone saying that? Did I miss that?

WORD. White Evangelicals hate me, cuz I’m Jewish...the fact our skin is vaguely the same shade doesn’t mean shit to them, and they sure as hell don’t consider me worth listening to.

I think there’s also an important lesson to be learned in realizing that every white person houses a lot of racism, and it often comes out at inopportune moments under stress. We need to be aware of that and actively recognize and fight against it, in ourselves and other people.

Was about to say this. Glad I’m not the only person aware of this history. Nice summation.

Yeah, but—the original suffrage movement was also filled with white women who actively organized alongside the abolitionists for decades. So there was a lot of racist ideology, but also there was a lot of collaboration. Stanton and Anthony organized beside Douglass and Anthony was a participant in the Underground

I don’t really understand where you’re going with this.
