I think plenty of women know it’s wrong and damaging, but want to be talking about FGM right now, since that’s what the article is about—and don’t think it’s AS wrong and damaging as FGM.

I mostly agree, but I do think plenty of trans women are way more sensitive to sexism than this. Some people just never learn.

Most FGM doesn’t just involve hood removal. Also, it’s done when someone is much older, so they’re way more likely to remember it.

I agree, but it’s like—where does that conversation end? Cutting women’s breasts up and removing some/all sensation to make them larger, because we as a culture have decided that’s what “pretty” looks like, is also a problem...not to mention “vaginal rejuvenation”...really, the issue of surgery that’s partly or…

No, but men dragging the issue back into their corner is them MAKING it a contest, and rerouting attention back to themselves and their much less impactful issue.

People choose to remain ignorant of the stated intentions behind FGM and just narrow it down to the doctor’s action—which even so isn’t the same, since FGM often involves removal of all of the outer lips and sometimes the inner ones, as well as the clitoris. It’s more like if someone circumcised a boy and then removed…

I hear you, and I’m very sorry that happened to you. I agree that it is very wrong, and the way it’s been done historically—in a public setting—just adds an unfortunate element of humiliation and horror.

He’s one of the big reasons people now confused feminism with women who are physically strong and/or kick ass. It’s not the same.
