Speaking strictly as a guy who does computer security for a living, this is horrible advice. Your phone is much more likely to be physically stolen than to be exploited in this manner.

Yet, most truckers I encounter on my short commute have no problem cutting me and everyone else off in order to get around a slower truck. I lost a car thanks to that.

If something I own is in proper working order, but I don't need it, I'm either selling it, donating it, or giving it to someone I know. It's not getting thrown away if it can still be used. I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks this way.
