25 years ago, my aunt and uncle spent 5 years as missionaries in the Central African Republic. The nearest “city” with groceries/mail/supplies/phone service/beer was 52km west just across the Cameroon border. It took my uncle 6-8 hours to make the trip in a Land Cruiser.
